The Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30)

The Parable of the Talents is a powerful biblical lesson that resonates with anyone pursuing success in business or their career. It highlights the importance of diligence, initiative, and wise stewardship of opportunities.

In the story, a master entrusts his three servants with talents (a form of currency) before leaving on a journey. To one servant, he gives five talents, to another two, and to the third, one talent—each according to their ability. The first two servants invest and work diligently, doubling their master’s money. However, the third servant, out of fear, buries his talent in the ground, returning only the original amount.

When the master returns, he praises the first two servants, saying, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.” But to the third servant, he expresses disappointment, calling him lazy and unproductive.

7 Lessons for Success in Business and Careers

  1. Be Trustworthy: One of the things we see in this story was first the master being able to entrust his wealth in the hands of these servants. We live in a world or society where trust seems dead; people can no longer trust their friends, employees, partners with their resources. One might argue, but the last servant wasn’t trustworthy; Yes he was! Although he didn’t utilize the gift given to him, he also didn’t multiply it but in all, he never lost it. The master trusted him enough not to lose what would be given to him. If you want to go  far, be someone who can be trusted!
  2. Use Your Gifts Wisely: Like the talents given to the servants, your skills, opportunities, and resources are gifts meant to be utilized. Fear and inaction stifle growth, but courage and effort lead to success.
  3. Take Risks and Be Proactive: The first two servants didn’t wait passively; they took initiative. Success in business and careers often requires stepping out of your comfort zone and taking calculated risks.
  4. Accountability and Growth: The master held his servants accountable for their actions. In your career or business, reflect on how you’re using your resources and skills to grow and contribute meaningfully. Learn to grow and multiply what you have. Don’t just grow in your finance, grow in your resources, grow in your connections, grow in your knowledge et al.
  5. Rewards Follow Faithfulness: The faithful servants were rewarded with greater responsibilities and opportunities. Similarly, consistent effort and excellence can open doors to greater success and fulfillment.
  6. Never be afraid: The servant said to the master, I was afraid hence why I hid the gift you gave to me. Fear limits us from achieving anything, to succeed in your business or career, kill fear before it kills you..
  7. Be creative: After having their gifts, the two wise servants thought of what to do with it and how to multiply it, they came up with creative ways to do this. To be truly successful at what you do, learn to be creative!

This story reminds us that success isn’t about the number of resources you start with but how diligently you use what’s given to you. By embracing opportunities with faith, hard work, and wisdom, you can achieve remarkable results in your business or career.

Take heart and remember: the seeds of greatness are already in your hands—it’s up to you to plant and nurture them!
